I teach breath techniques that are or are influenced by pranayama. My certification is in SOMA Breath and I am also certified in a continuing professional development course, "The Art of Guiding Meditations."
Yes! If you can breathe - you can participate. I may advise people with certain health conditions to avoid certain techniques. If you are new to breathwork and have a history with panic conditions or suffocation please make sure to gently go into breathwork. I will always go over any contraindications before a breathwork class or exercise and advise on alternatives. If you have any questions about your ability to participate in the meantime, reach out!
For clarity, these are the contraindications I review at the start of each breathwork journey session:
Forceful mouth breathing, prolonged breath holds and extended intense fast breathwork/hyperventilation for more than 5 minutes, should NOT be practiced in the case of any of the following: severe/critical diseases or infections if it impairs your ability to breathe, severe uncontrolled hypertension (usually after a heart attack), organ failure or late-stage terminal illness, pregnancy, if you have epilepsy, a pacemaker, or irregular heart beat (Exception: your doctor gives you specific permission). Some conditions (Eg: tinnitus, hernias) may be aggravated by forceful mouth breathing, prolonged breath holds and prolonged, intense, rapid breathing/hyperventilation and careful attention to technique is required.
Come to each session wearing comfortable clothes. You are worth the comfort you seek. All breathwork techniques should be done on an empty stomach. Avoid eating a full meal at least 1-2 hrs before the session. You will also want to find a quiet space for you to relax if the session is online. For in person, you may want to bring a yoga mat, blanket, or towel to lay on.
Playful – We all feel curious to try different things throughout life. Sometimes we avoid that urge. We might avoid trying it out because the experience feels inaccessible to us, we feel like an outsider in that environment, or the vibes do not align with ours. I put a playful spin on breathwork and make it fun for all! I intend to make you feel at home during our time together, whether that’s a post, a meditation, or a conversation. I know you will do the same!
Adventurous – Most of our exciting life experiences come from trying new things. Adventure = anticipation - what will we discover!? Adventure means we find out we thrive outside of our comfort zone. I allow myself adventure in creating unique breathwork experiences. I also allow myself to take an adventure inside myself that I might not otherwise explore without the breath. I encourage you to be adventurous in your own life and practice!
Charming – Getting to know people is like reading a favorite book. I also will not judge you by your cover! When it comes to the thought of inner work, it can sometimes feel daunting or overwhelming. If we flirt with inner work on a breathwork session, I make it feel as fun and playful as we need for you to feel safe to show up. I’m not into shame, blame, or fear-mongering.
Creative – Creativity is at my core. I love arts and crafts, imagination, themes, daydreaming, brainstorming, and expressing myself through bright colors. Blending creativity with breathwork feels so transformative for me. This includes both in creating sessions and experiencing them myself.
Meaningful – You matter. I craft meditations to have the experiences mean something to you. You are a beautiful human being. Connecting with you through this experience is a responsibility I cherish. I put my love into each meditation so you can feel your importance to the world.
